Mass

definition: Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in a object.
The S.I. unit of mass is the kilogram. The symbol for the kilogram is kg. Other commonly used units for mass are grams (g), milligrams (mg) and tonnes (t).
Measuring Mass
We use balances to measure mass. A beam balance makes use of known masses to measure the mass of an unknown object. While beam balances are accurate and easy to use, many laboratories also use electronic balances. The object whose mass is to be measured is placed on the metal pan and the reading is displayed.
